Displaying image description with the visual editor

I need to be able to display an image's description when it has been placed on a page with the visual editor, exactly the same way that editor deals with captions. I've managed to achieve this by using the img_caption_shortcode filter, but this only applies if the image has a caption.

Basically, some images will have captions, some will have descriptions, some will have both. I need both fields to be displayed underneath the image when they have been placed with the visual editor.

Any suggestions?
