Is wp_user_logged_in() secure?

Want to implement a Socket.io instant messaging project to a wordpress plugins.

I've looked for retrieve authenticated user by the wp_user_logged_in().

Is there a risk of identity usurpation by this way ? Or maybe i have to anything else or other (token based) but in the last, how ?
